Portrait of Monsieur Delaporte in the Jardin de Paris
Presumably 1893
Gouache on cardboard, mounted on wood, 76 x 70 cm

The Jardin de Paris, a café-concert on the Champs Elysées, opened in the spring of 1893. With opening hours beyond those of such popular establishments as Montmartre’s Moulin Rouge, it provided the possibility of further late-night entertainment. Léon Delaporte, the director of the advertising firm Delaporte and Chetard, which produced posters for the Variétés, was a habitué of the establishment. Placed as a monumental figure in the foreground plane, his figure frames a similar, seated gentleman and a glimpse of the brightly lit interior beyond. The woman dressed in purple, sporting a blue hat set on a pile of red hair, is the popular variety artist Jane Avril. Toulouse-Lautrec has employed accessories, such as the gas lamps and the glimpse of lilting figures, to extend the meaning of the portrait: Delaporte was not only a guest, but his business and fortune depended on the life of these dazzling entertainment establishments.
