Strude – photography by Trine Søndergaard

Trine Søndergaard is one of the most important figures in Danish photography today.

For three years she has visited the small North Sea Danish island of Fanø to immortalise the women in the island’s traditional head covering, a “strude”, which served as a protection against wind and weather. The results can be seen from 19th March until 16th May 2010.

This series of photographs challenges the genre of portraiture since the women in the traditional costume all look away from the camera.
